The benefit is it preserves a larger "unpaid balance" on the general contract, giving your future lien claim a greater chance of being secured for the full amount you are owed, rather than only the unpaid balance owed to the party you contracted with.

Nebraska Public Works
In Nebraska, a mechanic's lien on public works projects is not available. Subcontractors and suppliers can file suit on a payment bond. The bond cannot be less than the contract value except for certain state and local projects below a certain dollar threshold. Parties that do not have a direct contractual relationship with the contractor must give written notice within 4 months of last work. Suit must be filed within 1 year of final settlement of the general contract (if claimant unpaid within 90 days of last performance).
